I just hope everybody is excited about general aviation again. I hope that what we're doing is just enticing people back into wanting to fly and wanting to own a helicopter and thinking about all of the amazing things that you can do when you've got access to a private aircraft. – Jason Hill
A Passion Ignited in Youth
From the very start, Jason’s love for helicopters was evident. He recalls longing “to make the helicopter I’ve always wanted” and speaks passionately about the freedom of flight – "the ability to pick yourself up from your back garden and journey to remote, breathtaking destinations."
That early fascination drove him to study mechanical engineering, pursue a PhD in computational helicopter aerodynamics and, ultimately, earn his pilot’s licence, propelling him into a career that spans 25 years in the light helicopter sector.
Reinventing the Private Flying Experience
Throughout the conversation, Jason stressed that general aviation has grown stagnant, with helicopters still rooted in decades-old technology. He identified that many models suffer from outdated cockpit interfaces, minimal electronic aids and compromise on comfort and usability. Hill Helicopters sets out to change that by having a helicopter that marries cutting-edge engineering with premium aesthetics and intuitive digital controls.

Jason explained how their new machine – the HX50 - often compared to an “aerial grand tourer” and even likened to the "Aston Martin of the skies" – reflects the future of private flying. Key innovations include a digital cockpit featuring haptic feedback on flight controls, autopilot capabilities that streamline navigation, and a system that continuously monitors pilot behaviour to offer real‑time support. The result is a helicopter that’s as safe as it is stunning, designed specifically with the private owner operator in mind.
The HX50 and the GT50 Engine
Unlike traditional machines, the HX50 is built with state‑of‑the‑art technology, from a high‑pressure rotor system that remains steady even in blustery winds, to a digital flight ecosystem that manages everything from fuel monitoring to navigation.
Jason emphasised the challenges overcome by his team; from designing proprietary gears and bearings to developing a cost‑effective jet engine – the GT50 – built entirely in‑house. “The moment that engine runs, everybody’s perception of this project will change overnight,” he said. The GT50 underpins the performance of the HX50, ensuring that the helicopter remains powerful and efficient even during the most demanding flights.

Building a Community and a Transparent Future
Jason mentioned that, despite the inevitable hurdles in launching a helicopter company, openness with customers has built unparalleled trust. Weekly updates, behind‑the‑scenes factory tours and regular social media posts have fostered a global community of passionate helicopter pilots and enthusiasts.
Perhaps one of the most compelling aspects of the interview was Jason’s reflection on the long and arduous journey to success. Jason’s response was simple: work relentlessly, communicate honestly and make every part of the helicopter – from the engine to the gears – in‑house to control quality and cost.

Jason shared his excitement about major milestones set for 2025. The first run of the GT50 engine and the inaugural test flight of the HX50 are on the horizon.
